Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original U.S. Navy Officer issue screw back Hamilton R88-W-800 wrist watch, made by Hamilton. The watch is based on the 987 17 Jewel Movement used by Hamilton in all WW2 Military Wristwatches. This wonderful example has been fully cleaned, tested and runs perfectly. It has a white face with radium luminous hands for night use. It has the name HAMILTON on the face. Features a replacement crystal, as the original had deteriorated over time. The band is a correct high quality tan web reproduction.
During WWII, Hamilton supplied watches for the US Army, Navy, and Marine Corps [the Air Force was the Army Air Force]. There were a total of 168,560 watches made by Hamilton during WWII. Hamilton made 110,336 Model 987A watches for the Army from 1942-1945.
In 1940, the Ordnance Department published the requirements for military watches. The list includes pocket, wrist, and stop watches. The Hamilton was known for their 987A movement with a dust cover and a screw back. The last models has made had a snap back. The early 987A had sub-seconds, and the later 987s and 2987 had center seconds. None of these variations had the hack function found on later watches.
